Degus look very much like a larger version of a gerbil. They can live 6-8 years and are diurnal, which means they are most active during the day. They can be kept in same-sex pairs but are very social and easy to tame when kept alone.

They require a large cage with a solid bottom and ramps so they don't injure their feet. Because of their size, you need to be cautious with bar spacing to avoid espcaes. Like Chinchillas, they can benefit from a dust bath to keep their coat clean.

Their diet must consist of a high quality, balanced pellet and hay, due to their predisposition to diabetes.
