Degus look very similar to a larger version of a gerbil. They can live 6-8 years and are diurnal, which means they are most active during the day. They can be kept in same-sex pairs but are very social and easy to tame when kept alone. They require a large cage with a solid bottom and ramps. Because of their size, you need to be cautious with bar spacing. Like Chinchillas, they need a dust bath to keep their coat clean. Their diet must consist of a high quality pellet and hay, due to their predisposition to Diabetes.
