Sugar gliders have gotten a lot of hype over the last couple of years. This is likely due to the fact that they are…you guessed it, incredibly cute. Pet World is one of the few locations licensed in Massachusetts to sell sugar gliders and our team of pet experts have all the information you need to determine if a sugar glider is the right addition to your family. Today, we would like to tell you about what makes sugar gliders so special in our hearts and unique to your home.

  • These tiny marsupials are originally from the Australian and Indonesian rainforest. They are named sugar gliders for two reasons. First, they have a gliding membrane that looks similar to the arm of a flying squirrel. This clever little membrane is attached from their wrist to their ankle and they use it to glide from place to place. Second, sugar gliders love love love sweets. Fresh fruits and vegetables are their favorite.
  • Sugar gliders can live for around 12 to 15 years, making them comparable to our beloved cats and dogs instead of pets in the rodent family that live for a much shorter amount of time. These guys are great for the long term.
  • One amazing fact about sugar gliders is how smart they are. Your sugar glider pet can learn his or her name and then come when called. Given the way in which these little creatures like to roam, this is a very useful tool to teach them.
  • Like you and me, sugar gliders are quite good at keeping themselves clean. Unlike you and me, they do not require any bathing. These makes them reasonably neat members of the family.
  • People love sugar gliders because of the way in which they bond with their family. These are very social animals and it is recommended that they live with another sugar glider as a companion. They are both playful and curious and so really enjoy engaging with their family on a regular basis. This makes them very entertaining for all.
  • It is important to keep in mind that as social animals, sugar gliders require a great deal of daily attention and care. They tend to experience signs of depression if they are left alone too much. Additionally, daily handling is recommended to prevent sugar gliders from getting nippy or too territorial. They love getting attention from you, but they also require that attention to be happy and healthy. Keep all this in mind if you are considering a sugar glider as a pet and have small children in the house, as we do not recommend them as ideal for kids.
  • Sugar gliders need large cages and room to roam outside of their cage. They also tend to like to curl up in a pouch or even a shirt pocket from time to time. Make sure you are able to provide them with supervised exploration time. They want your company, and you will want to make sure their curious nature does not get them into trouble.
  • Stop into Pet World today to talk to our staff about what it looks like to live with a sugar glider and get a glimpse of these adorable little friends.
