February is Responsible Pet Guardian Month

Happy Pet Guardian Month! That’s right. Most people associate February with Valentine’s Day, but here at Pet World, we like to celebrate our responsibility to our pets.

Happy Pet Guardian Month! That’s right. Most people associate February with Valentine’s Day, but here at Pet World, we like to celebrate our responsibility to our pets. Many of us are grateful to our little critters every day. They provide us with unconditional love, companionship, entertainment, and even safety. Well, this February, we want to remind you that you provide them with a home, food, affection, and also guardianship. Owning an animal is about more than just caring for them. Owning an animal is about watching over our pets, keeping them safe, and serving as their guardian.

Whether you are a new pet owner, or have had your furry friend for years, it is important to take a moment and check that you are doing all you can to be the best guardian you can be. We want to offer you some ideas for how to do this. You might be doing some of these responsible guardian tips already—great! Or you may not have known that these steps can be just as important as giving your pets their favorite food and regular attention—we can all learn! No matter how you show your pet you love them, we want to advocate for putting your animal’s physical, social, behavioral, and psychological needs first.

Always make sure you are taking your pet for regular checkups at the vet. This helps you to keep tabs on their health, and perhaps catch an illness early that could be preventative. Also, take your furry friend to the groomer or keep up with simple at-home grooming, like cutting nails and brushing. Train your dog to ensure a stress-free life and manage simple behavioral habits. Provide daily exercise and attention to your critters, whether that means outdoor walks and fetch or indoor play with toys. Microchip your dog or cat to prepare for any issues of escape. With this microchipping technology, you can increase your pets’ odds of getting home safe should they go missing. Research the food you are feeding your pet. Just like with humans, nutritional information can change for what is best for our animals and staying up to date is important.

Remember to educate yourself and others on your furry friend. Help teach kids how to appropriately and safely approach a dog, explain to guests how your cat likes to be pet, or talk about why your hedgehog might have a different schedule than we do. We know our pets best and so it is our job to help them communicate with other people. Have a family pet disaster preparedness plan in place in case of an emergency. Talk to your local vet about pet emergency kits and plans. Above all, remember that as a guardian and protector to your pets, they are complex, smart, emotional creatures too. Keep an eye on them for signs of distress or sadness and make sure to attend to their particular and unique needs.

At Pet World, we value every animal we house in-store and help provide a home. This February, remind yourself of your role as their guardian and celebrate Responsible Pet Guardian Month with us!
